Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the difference between Tracking, Mixing & Mastering?
1a:
Tracking is recording onto a surface that has the capability to play it
back.
At Lakefront Studio we use both Digidesign ProTools and Steinberg
Nuendo to record to
and the Yamaha DM2000's mic pres and converters for
24 channel simulations recording capability.
2b: Mixing
is the process blending all the various tracks you've recorded and producing
a mix.
Lakefront mixes with over a hundred different plugins and
plays
it all back on the KRK V8 speaker system.
3a: Mastering
is taking the mix and bringing it to what's commonly called a 'Radio Ready'
format.
Mastering Engineers put the 'shine' on the top and clarify
the low at the bottom, all the while rounding
out the overall sound of
the recoding, completing the recording process.
Q: Who should mix the song?
A:
When you invest in a recording studio, you might take advantage of the
engineer's experience and their 'ears'.
The engineer knows the room
and knows the system best, so it¹s normally suggested that they¹re
the ones that
mainly mixes the songs. Many times a producer will sit in
on the mix after it's been 'Blocked Out'
(Blocked Out meaning arranging
the basics of each recording; aux tracks, equalization, compression, etc..)
Q: Does the Studio Environment matter during the recording process?
A:
Ideally, you want to be somewhere where you can focus on your craft. Somewhere
where
people can focus on bringing the recording to that next level. A place where people are able to
collaborate and work for the good of the
project, and Lakefront Studios provides that very environment.
Q: What is the difference between traditional studios and lakefrontstudios?
A:
No difference, really. Lakefront is a full functional recording studio;
capable of doing anything you
would be able to do in any other recording
studio. It all comes down to how it sounds; 'demo quality' or
'studio
quality'.
Q: When do I know if I'm ready to go to the studio?
A:
It's very important to be prepared when you decide to invest in recording
at any studio.
When you've got all your songs and all your lyrics
together and there¹s nothing to do but track it. It's very important
that
when you
come to a studio you are fully prepared to get down to business. One of
the worst things you can do is take
the time and finances to come out to
a studio, and then do stuff you could have done at home before you got
there.
The more prepared an artist is upon arriving at the studio;
the more time you can spend focusing on the recording.
Q: Is it important for an artist and the engineer to get along?
A:
It's essential to the recording process. The relationship between
the artist and the engineer can make or break a session.
The artist
needs to convey what they want out of the recording and it's up to the
engineer to make it happen.
It's important the recording meets (or
exceeds) the artist's expectation, and Lakefront Studios is able to do
just that.
Q: Can Lakefront Studios handle a live recording?
A:
Being equipped with the DM2000 gives Lakefront Studios 24-track simultanious
recording capability.
Lakefront has unlimited tracks within Nuendo,
so you're able to build you recording up and fill in all those voids.
Q: What types of music can be recorded at Lakefront?
A:
Any type of music can be recorded at Lakefront Studios. Lakefront
has an experienced staff and the means
to record virtually anything.
This is anywhere from a jazz quartet to a blue grass group, a radio commercial
to a full rock band.
Anything and everything, Lakefront can record
it and provide the client with a professional product at the end of the
day.
Q: If I already have everything tracked, can I have it mixed there?
A:
Absolutely. Lakefront Studios prides itself on producing professional
sounding mixes as well.
We're also equipped with a vast selection
of plugins to help sweeten any recording.
Q: What do I need to bring?
A:
Bring whatever you'd like to work on. The best-case scenario is to
have the tracks broken up track by track,
but we can import in stereo tracks
as well. If you have your session on DAT or any other format,
please let us know
before hand so that we can provide the correct transfer equipment to facilitate
you.
Q: How do I get to the studio?
A:
Coming from Atlanta, you take I-20 EAST out to exit #82 (Route 138). Take
a left at the top and
continue for about 10 minutes until you come across
millers bottom. Make a left and continue for about 2 miles.
You'll come across a subdivision named Windward Chase and you'll make a
left into the subdivision.
Continue on until you come to a stop sign,
directly in front of you is Lakefront Studios.
Make a left and then
an immediate right into the driveway, follow it down to the back and come
on in.
